German Chancellor Angela Merkel will use her trip to China to lobby for trust in the euro zone, a senior government official said Tuesday. The chancellor will lobby to restore confidence in European leaders' efforts to stabilize the situation in the single currency bloc, said the official, who declined to be identified, during a briefing on Merkel's trip.
Merkel will outline the results of Monday's European Union summit, where an agreement aimed at resolving the euro-zone debt crisis was reached, to Chinese leaders during her trip, the official said.
"The Chinese side will of course be interested in the results of the summit," said the official. "The chancellor will lobby for trust in Europe, she will also meet financial investors."
Merkel is due to arrive in Beijing Thursday to meet with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao.
Leaders of 25 EU governments agreed Monday night on what some were billing as a historic pact to move to closer fiscal union and to finally sign off on the details of a EUR500 billion permanent bailout fund for the euro zone that should come into operation at mid-year.
