Mubarak's trial resumes to listen to defense lawyers

The Egyptian Cairo Criminal Court resumed on Tuesday the trial of ex-President Hosni Mubarak, his two sons, his former Minister of Interior Habib el-Adli and Adli's six assistants, to listen to the defendants' lawyers. The toppled president, Adli and six aides face charges of ordering and complicity in killing the protesters during Jan. 25 unrest of last year which overthrew Mubarak's regime. Meanwhile, Mubarak, his sons and the Egyptian fugitive businessman Hussein Salem are accused of profiteering, corruption, and wasting the public money. In previous sessions of the trial, the civil plaintiffs' lawyers accused the defendants of premeditated murder, calling for the death penalty to Mubarak, Adli and his aides. The general prosecution representative Mustafa Suleiman also demanded death penalty to Mubarak, Adli, and six aides over killing the protesters, confirming that he had evidences of defendants' involvement in killing. The defendants have appeared at court several times since their trial began on Aug. 3, 2011. Head of the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) Hussein Tantawi and former vice President Omar Suleiman have testified behind closed doors in previous sessions.
